In the 1950's Caribbean, white men in power actually used to kick their black subalterns; my mother tells me the story of a white South African who did this quite regularly at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad where she worked as a computer. One time after being kicked, a black subaltern turned around and slapped the white professor in the face; I surmise that the heady years of Negritude, of Williams, James, Fanon and Césaire and the gathering momentum of decolonization, are the catalysts that gave this black man the courage to defend his sense of personhood. Many thanks for your very cogent piece-- I'm greatly encouraged when I see that there are indeed some thinking people in English Departments in this country.

Richard Douglass-Chin
Department of English
University of Windsor
Richard Douglass-Chinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09237975911634271164noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-237211826691679637.post-26877175505515607062018-02-13T12:53:29.809-08:002018-02-13T12:53:29.809-08:00So far, it's a sonnet at sixes and sevens. So far, it's a sonnet at sixes and sevens.Kevin McNeillyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17366899070068507252noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-237211826691679637.post-21201502421736217692017-08-24T12:51:03.885-07:002017-08-24T12:51:03.885-07:00Hello, I too was there (awarded my Chief Scout at...Hello, I too was there (awarded my Chief Scout at cj77). I'd just finished reading the essay, and I googled it to see the best way I could share it with family members and friends, and landed here on your blog.

I like your observations of Jamie searching out (attending to) metaphors that appear naturally in life, and then spending the time of the whole essay with the metaphor and bringing the reader carefully along with her journey towards understanding.

When I reached the end of your podcast, I was disappointed not to hear more critique/analysis about the personal--that concluding conversation between her and her sister and her grandmother. It is one thing to write about un-inscribed cairns and cemeteries at the end of the road, but to be able to open her heart to us and invite us into the room with her sister and grandmother--that is what stuns me about her writing. And left tears in my eyes. I wish I could do that.Bill Kimzeyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04310947083822824840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-237211826691679637.post-4124879373855325392015-08-14T13:09:34.598-07:002015-08-14T13:09:34.598-07:00Hello Frank. I too was a boy scout visiting Cavendish beach for the first time among the throng of 20,000 plus boy scouts. I was all of 11 years old that hot July. I do remember seeing Anne Murray and Phil Esposito believe it or not. I remember him because I wrote it in a diary. I also remember the Snowbirds and other dignitaries in front of that large Canada map. But now that you say it, In think I vaguely remember Stompin Tom also performing there. I last saw him in concert in 2011 and even got his autograph, so I was especially pleased and blessed to have that special keepsake before he passed on.
